The barges were hung up just a mile away for about a day. Once they started moving again, there was basically no time to react.

true, but closing them would have at least kept the barges floating. They look hydraulically actuated to me.

they darn near slipped through each spillway gate - but not to be... That’s gotta have done some damage to the dam too.
